They were walking side by side, the way they had done it a thousand times before. Along the same street, retracing their own steps, each carrying a pack of cigarettes, the same brand as always, just bought from the same shop, passing the same dim houses, with the same cluttered yards, and broken fences. It had always been like that in this neighbourhood… In fact, only the faintest sense of nostalgia in the late autumn scenery, over a thing long lost in time, suggested that something had irrevocably changed.
When sharing her feelings with him, Michael just glanced at her.
